Electric Circuits practice quiz

Covers: DC circuits, Kirchhoff’s rules and RC circuits. Quiz one topic at a time or take the whole unit.

Topics in this unit

The idea each topic turns on, and the mistake students make most often.

Current and Resistance

5 questions

Key ideaI = dQ/dt, and R = ρL/A. Ohm’s law, V = IR, applies to ohmic materials.

Common mistakeThinking a longer wire has less resistance, or that current is used up as it flows around a circuit.

Resistor Circuits

6 questions

Key ideaIn series the current is the same and the voltages add; in parallel the voltage is the same and the currents add. Kirchhoff’s loop and junction rules handle everything else.

Common mistakeCombining resistors that are neither in series nor in parallel, or getting signs wrong going around a loop.

Capacitors in Circuits

5 questions

Key ideaAn uncharged capacitor acts like a wire at first. A fully charged capacitor carries no current, like a break in the circuit.

Common mistakeLetting steady current flow through a charged capacitor branch.

RC Circuits

9 questions

Key ideaThe time constant is τ=RC\tau = RC. A charging capacitor follows Q=Qmax⁡(1−e−t/τ)Q = Q_{\max}(1 - e^{-t/\tau}), and the current decays as e−t/τe^{-t/\tau}.

Common mistakeUsing the wrong R in the time constant. It is the equivalent resistance seen from the capacitor’s terminals (with the battery replaced by a wire).

Current and Resistance

The charge passing a point in a wire is Q(t)=4t2−tQ(t) = 4t^2 - t, with QQ in coulombs and tt in seconds. What is the current at t=2t = 2 s?

  1. A15 A
  2. B14 A
  3. C7 A
  4. D16 A
Show hint

Current is the rate at which charge passes: I=dQdtI = \frac{dQ}{dt}.

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. 15 A

I=dQdt=8t−1I = \frac{dQ}{dt} = 8t - 1. At t=2t = 2 s, I=15I = 15 A.
