Energy and Momentum of Rotating Systems practice quiz

Covers: Rotational energy, rolling and angular momentum. Quiz one topic at a time or take the whole unit.

Topics in this unit

The idea each topic turns on, and the mistake students make most often.

Rotational Energy & Work

4 questions

Key ideaKrot = ½Iω², and work by a torque is ∫τ dθ.

Common mistakeLeaving out ½Iω² for a pulley or a rolling object.

Angular Momentum

4 questions

Key ideaL = Iω for a rigid body, and L = r × p for a particle. Net torque = dL/dt.

Common mistakeTaking the angular momentum about a different point than the one used for the torques.

Conservation of Angular Momentum

5 questions

Key ideaWith no net external torque about a point, the angular momentum about that point is constant, even during a collision.

Common mistakeConserving linear momentum when a pivot exerts a force, or conserving kinetic energy in an inelastic rotational collision.

Rolling

5 questions

Key ideaRolling without slipping links v = Rω and a = Rα. Static friction does no work on a rolling object.

Common mistakeThinking friction removes energy from an object rolling without slipping.

Orbits

5 questions

Key ideaFor an orbit, gravity provides the centripetal force. Angular momentum about the planet is conserved, and the total energy is negative for a bound orbit.

Common mistakeUsing U = mgh far from the planet, where U = −GMm/r is needed.

Try a sample question

This is one of the 23 questions in the Unit 6 quiz.

Rolling

A ball rolls without slipping down a ramp. How much work does static friction do on the ball?

  1. AZero, because the contact point doesn’t slide
  2. BA negative amount, which becomes thermal energy
  3. CA positive amount that speeds up the spin
  4. DIt depends on the ramp angle
Show hint

Work requires the point where the force acts to move along the force. While rolling without slipping, is the contact point moving?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. Zero, because the contact point doesn’t slide

Static friction acts at the contact point, which is momentarily at rest. With no sliding, friction does no net work and no mechanical energy is lost. It only shifts energy between translation and rotation.
